The
Uniqueness of the Art Village |
| |
|
The
Safulak Art Village is near the Bau-San Dam in San-Hu Village,
Bau-San, Sin-Chu County. The village has three old buildings,
one of which is a 70-year-old one story brick house, occupied
by a Mr. Yau-Gi Gu, a native from Bau-San. It was built when
Taiwan was occupied by Japan. His childen also grew up here,
one of which won first place in the college entrance exam. They
were accepted by National Taiwan University and majored in electronic
and computer science. The villagers feel such success may be
credited to the regions good feng shui. We have re-modeled this
old house for the Safulak Cafe. The other two buildings, built
for the construction of Bau-San Dam, were also re-modeled as
a performance and exhibition center, an Art Village management
office, conference room, and artists workshops. |

Mr.Chou
bought this place in 1981. He spent 20 years and much effort
planting trees, managing, and developing the land. His young
trees have become a healthy forest, whose colors change with
the seasons, and also support a variety of animal species. Other
unique features include two pedestrian cable suspension bridges
which cross the dam and allow visitors to more fully enjoy the
lake. |

The
Meaning Of "SAFULAK"
|
| |
|
"Safulak"
was the original name of San-Hu Village in Bau-San. Bau-San
is a hilly region where springs flow into creeks, and terraced
fields grow from sandy soil. Back when most people were poor,
less-advanced farmers, they grew pumpkins (Golden Melons) for
a living. After heavy rainfall, small winding creeks full of
sand would form, and so it was named Safulak, which means Sandy
Lake. |
